We'll always have the diner

Today I found Fountain Square. I'd heard of this section of the city, but I'd never actually been there. After learning that Shelby Street Diner was closed early for the day, I was pleased to find the Fountain Square Diner.

The place reminded me of a museum exhibit I visited countless times as a child with my grandparents. There was an old restored dining car at Henry Ford Museum in Detroit. This dining car was vintage 50's down to the buttons on the booth jukeboxes. The dessert case was filled with wax molds of pies, cakes, and ice cream sundaes. The menu board advertised hamburgers for 49 cents and coffee for a dime. I loved sitting at the counter and pretending the mannequin in the paper hat was taking my order.

Fountain Square had higher prices and it didn't have individual jukeboxes. However, I was thrilled to hear Billie Holiday and Robert Johnson being pumped through the speakers. I had a great club sandwich and enjoyed seeing the vintage movie posters and soft drink signs on the walls. I'll definitely be back.
