Today is Groundhog Day, my friend Bethany's birthday, and the Catholic/Orthodox Christian celebration of Candlemas. In order to celebrate all of these occasions, I offer you a quote concerning each.
"Okay, campers, rise and shine, and don't forget your booties 'cause it's cooooold out there today." - radio DJ in the Bill Murry film, Groudhog Day
"We have threeee people!" - my friend Heather speaking very loudly to the waiter when we took Bethany out for her birthday several years ago
"Down with the rosemary, and so
Down with the bays and mistletoe;
Down with the holly, ivy, all,
Wherewith ye dress'd the Christmas Hall"
— Robert Herrick (1591–1674), "Ceremony upon Candlemas Eve"
P.S.
My "New Thing of the Day" was learning about Candlemas. Apparently this is the Holy Day celebrating the presentation of Jesus in the temple. Sort of like the anniversary of his christening. I wonder if he had godparents? Did they use holy water? What on earth happened? Weird to think about...
It also used to be the day people took down their Christmas decorations. Can you imagine? The only people who still have them up are Gretchen Wilson fans!
thanks for the education on candlemas! never even heard of it lol! and love the gretchen wilson reference! :)
