“When an evil spirit leaves a person, it goes into the desert, searching for rest. But when it finds none, it says, ‘I will return to the person I came from.’ So it returns and finds that its former home is all swept and in order. Then the spirit finds seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they all enter the person and live there. And so that person is worse off than before.”
~*Luke 11:24-26
When things improve, don't let your guard down. Evil does not go quickly or quietly. It is planning the next (bigger) assault. This seems to be especially true in the weak places of our addictions. Perhaps that's because we can relate to being in the desert, searching for rest.
We could take that metaphor further and talk about mirages seen in the desert. We could consider how filthy water is appealing when one is terminally dehydrated. Or there is the fact that each step in the desert is scorching and we'd almost rather stop where we are than press on.
