My Inevitable Election Reflection

Last night, we elected the first black president of the United States. I have never seen so much unbridled joy in the shelter! At least 50% of the residents and 70% of the staff are black. (I say black because we have several Africans, an Egyptian, and a few clients from Turkey.) My clients were hugging each other and actually singing together! there was not a complaint or ill word spoken all night. Glory truly shone around us, and on the faces of both black and white women alike. It was unlike anything I've ever seen. I have seen tremendous anguish there, and now I have seen overwhelming joy. And it was so very sweet. Not false saccharine sweet, but pure natural sweet.
I wish my Christian friends could be part of this. Like it or not, we are a part of history, and we will always have this story to tell. Our children will ask us about this, and we will all have a story to tell them.
I am very sad to say that the majority of my Christian friends are angry. They say our nation has made a huge mistake. I've heard a lot of half-jokes about moving out of the country and about the evils of socialism. How can these college educated adults confuse socialism with Communism? Why would they oppose social change? Why do they mourn? This is a day for rejoicing! We are a huge step closer to Dr. King's dream being realized! That was never a dream exclusively for blacks; it couldn't have been. It was a dream for all people because it takes all people to produce true unity and equality.
This is the biggest event that anyone living today has ever seen. We need to praise God that (at least officially) we have overcome the color barrier! How can people not understand this?! Barak Obama awoke an apathetic nation in a way we never thought possible. And that is good. We actually used our political system! So many people turned out to vote that they had to wait in lines for hours.
No, of course we're not going to have a magic change immediately; that's impossible. There is no way anyone on earth could make everything all better right away. But we need to chill! For calling themselves Christians, there are a lot of people who are quick to criticize.
All I'm saying is that we all need to recognize that there IS something to celebrate, regardless of our political affiliation. This is about people coming together.
