After the rehearsal dinner, we hung out in the hotel bar with some people we met at the dinner. A very cool couple from our hometown who are several years older than us. When we were growing up the age gap made a difference, but I'm thrilled to see it no longer does.
We met a middle-aged Russian immigrant in the hotel bar. He muttered Russian into his cell phone and told the bar tender about how his car had just been totalled. The friends we had met at the dinner decided to buy this man a drink, so we ended up talking to him for over an hour. He discussed real estate, the cold war, the ethnic enclaves of Chicago, and his love of vodka. Fascinating man!
When I was in Munich many years ago we sat in the beerhall with a family from the former East Germany. Since they were from the East they didn't speak English (and we being American soldiers didn't speak German or Russian)... The girlfriend of the son was from the West so she translated for us all evening... they LOVED us because we were American soldiers... After we were introduced we didn't buy another beer all night. Quite an experience.
ReplyDeleteAugh! Your comment box makes me crazy.
ReplyDeleteWhy did that go through and my well-though-out comment did not? I am living vicariously through you—keep trying new things. But how do you ruin gingerbread?
